About Qingming Festival
Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day, is one of the most important traditional festivals in China. It usually falls on April 4, 5, or 6 of the Gregorian calendar each year. The festival has a history of more than 2,500 years and carries both natural and cultural significance — it is both a solar term (the Qingming solar term in the 24 traditional Chinese solar terms) and a time for honoring ancestors.
The two main customs of Qingming are tomb sweeping and ancestor worship (expressing remembrance and respect for departed family members) and spring outings (enjoying the rebirth of nature and the beauty of early spring). Other traditional activities include planting willow branches, flying kites, and eating qingtuan (green glutinous rice balls filled with sweet bean paste).
In 2006, Qingming Festival was inscribed on China's first list of National Intangible Cultural Heritage. Since 2008, it has been an official public holiday in China, typically offering a three-day break (including a weekend) for people to return to their hometowns for tomb sweeping or to enjoy a short spring trip.
